QUEERING SOUND at Takoma Spark: Safety Bear / Sad Veiled Bride / Ella Gallogly
Saturday June 6 * 7pm * $10-15 * LOCATION: TAKOMA SPARK (a.k.a. School of Musical Traditions) 7112 Willow Ave
Safety Bear is an independent Hi-NRG electronic artist who weaves together pulsing dance beats and immersive atmospheres with subject matter typically alien to the dance floor. Safety Bear’s energetic live performances and studio recordings deliver original Hi-NRG bangers (and the occasional re-imagined dance classic) via the intriguing guise of a neurotic (and slightly injured) teddy bear.
Safety Bear tracks have been remixed by Nate Lanzino, Lane Young, Chinedu Onome, and Sanity Assassin. Safety Bear EP-02 and EP-03 are produced by Steve Wright (Future Islands / Pigeons Playing Ping Pong). Safety Bear EP-04 and EP-05 are produced by Ian Shaw (Bikini Kill / Nick Heyward) .
To date, Safety Bear has performed in major U.S. cities including New York, Boston, Washington, D.C., Orlando, Key West, and also in London, England. Local festivals have included the Fort Reno Summer Concert Series and Capitol Pride Celebration.
Sad Veiled Bride leads the audience on a lo-fi journey through personal grievances and ennui. Employing the ukulele as a centerpiece, Stanton crafts melancholic ditties that serve as cathartic laments for the artist and listener. 80’s influenced electronic beats and flourishes propel the mercifully short songs to satisfying yet ambiguous ends.
Whether performing at alternative festivals like Queering Sound or releasing DIY-driven EPs, Bev Stanton continues to use Sad Veiled Bride to push the boundaries of her sonic identity, moving away from the “disco bus” energy of her other projects toward something more mysterious and profoundly personal.
Ella Gallogly spent decades honing her guitar, drum, and vocal skills, eagerly dives into life's darker moments, turning them into searing light through soul-searching tunes.
QUEERING SOUND is a volunteer-driven, multifaceted arts festival of LGBTQIA+ artists/allies held annually in Washington DC that features visual art, spoken word, video/new media, and a wide variety of musical styles. Since 1999, QUEERING SOUND has presented 100+ local, national, and international artists at nine DMV venues and online; highlighting artists who push against and create their work outside the socially-mainstreamed boundaries of sound and vision. https://queeringsound.com
