Screening of Ferngully: The Last Rainforest with discussion about NYC garden defense

Wed, May 6 at 7:30 PM Ridgewood Commons

Please join us this Wednesday, May 6th for a screening of the animated film Ferngully: The Last Rainforest. Like a lot of 90s media this film is fun and beautiful while containing a deeply vital and radical message. Zak the human works for a logging company when he meets Crysta the fairy, who accidentally shrinks him to save him from being crushed by a falling tree. The two then fight the company to save the forest. This touching film for children advocates for environmental protection and animal rights with a star-studded voice-cast, featuring Samantha Mathis, Jonathan Ward, Tim Curry, Robin Williams, Christian Slater, and Grace Zabriskie.

Following the film we will have an open discussion about BCF and other gardens who have had to defend the land.

Bushwick City Farm, on Stockton and Lewis in Bed-Stuy on the Bushwick border has been a thriving community space that was transformed from an empty trash-ridden lot by activists and neighbors. This past Earth Day marked their 15 year anniversary. They have also been fighting the landlord, who has not paid his taxes, and had attempted to lock them out just a couple months ago.
